Samsung just announced a brand new smartwatch at IFA 2017 called the Gear Sport and it’s the first wearable from the company that encourages you to take it into the pool for a swim.
The new Samsung Gear Sport is a minor update on the Gear S3 Classic and Frontier and comes with new software features to encourage you to exercise more, while still sporting a premium style you can wear on a night out.
It features an all-round watch face, with both black and blue versions available and a selection of 23 straps at launch, made from varying materials including silicon, leather, fabric and a hybrid of leather and rubber combined.
There’s a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 360, which equals 302 pixels-per-inch and should offer a great resolution. It’s protected with Gorilla Glass 3 to try and stop scratches.
Under the hood there's a dual-core processor and 4GB of storage for you to upload music, similar to both versions of the Gear S3. It’s also running the latest Tizen software.
No need for workout DVDs
Like other Samsung watches, we expect this to be compatible with most modern Android and iOS devices, so you won’t need to own a Galaxy Note 8 or Galaxy S8 to be able to use it.
When it comes to fitness there’s swim-tracking and up to 50M waterproofing technology here, so you can take the watch for a swim in the pool or open water. There’s also built-in GPS so you can take the Gear Sport for a run without connecting it to your phone.
The heart rate tracker is also more pronounced on the Gear Sport, which Samsung claims will lead to a more accurate reading while you’re exercising.
Perhaps one of the most useful upgrades with the Gear Sport is a new selection of fitness programs that come with video tutorials. These will work on your phone or you can even stream them to your TV if you’re working out at home.
The video will show you the exercises you should be doing for your plan and speak you through what you’re doing as well. Plus your TV will then show your heart rate while you exercise, which should make it easier to monitor than if you had to keep glancing at your wrist.
Samsung also just announced a new fitness tracker called the Gear Fit 2 Pro, as well as new earbuds called the Samsung Icon X 2018. Make sure to read our hands on Samsung Gear Sport review to see our early thoughts on that.
