“Pay with Google” Available in Latest Play Services, on its way to Android’s Chrome Browser

Google has recently begun increasing their efforts to get a foothold in the mobile payments market, with the launch of Tez in India, the expansion of Android Pay into the Central Bank of Australia and now, a more recent addition, “Pay with Google”. It was fully added in the September update of Google Play Services v11.4, which means that while Google Chrome has integrated it now, any developer can actually start using this for payments within their app. It is not exclusive to Chrome.

Pay with Google was actually announced back in May at the Google I/O developer conference, and is a result of a collaboration between Google, Mozilla, Samsung, Alibaba, Microsoft, and other companies. They have created the Web Payments Working Group, and aim to make purchases for users on mobile devices as easy as possible using applications you already have on your device.

Users will have a “Pay with Google” option on websites supporting the API, where they can use their saved credit cards to pay for items instead of having to actually take out their card and add the details for each individual site. Not only that, it will support applications on your device that already have your card details. This means that you can put away the wallet, and simply pay with Google within your Chrome browser rather than having to deal with typing in all of your details on any site you may use. It can use your saved Android Pay credentials if you want, or use card details saved to your account from previous purchases.

This was added to Chrome in the latest version of the browser and is now enabled by default! The API should be launching worldwide to developers who wish to implement this on their website. You can sign up to be notified when the API is launched on the website. If you’re interested in reading some more technical details, you can check out this post which gives a more technical explanation of its full capabilities and its security.
