The beta version of Android 8.0 Oreo for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T is now available for download, having been released by the Chinese original equipment manufacturer through the company’s Open Beta program. The major update comes in the form of the OxygenOS beta build 16 which was officially introduced on Saturday and weighs just under 870MB. In addition to the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system, the beta will also enhance the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T with the September 2017 Android security update. The BBK Electronics-owned company specifically mentioned the Picture-in-Picture mode, smart text selection, form auto-fill, and Quick Settings redesign as the most notable additions that debut with the update, though all of these items are part of the stock version of Android 8.0 Oreo available on other devices eligible to install the OS.
Being a beta build, the software package may still be prone to crashing or cause previously unforeseen problems on your handset. The Shenzhen, Guangdong-based consumer electronics manufacturer already identified several frequent issues associated with the firmware update, including unreliable Bluetooth and NFC support, occasionally slow fingerprint readings, and performance concerns related to a number of third-party apps which have yet to be specified. Google Photos shortcut is also unavailable following the installation of the experimental software, OnePlus said, adding that its entire device tree will be released at some point next week. Refer to the banner below for detailed instructions on how to install Android 8.0 Oreo on your OnePlus 3 or OnePlus 3T.
The phone maker previously confirmed that Oreo will be the last major OS iteration that its 2016 devices will receive, with the newer OnePlus 5 presumably also being slated for an update to Android 9.0 P in late 2018 or early 2019. There’s still no concrete information on how long will OnePlus take to tweak and optimize the software for a stable release on a global level, though the wait presumably won’t be longer than several weeks and you should have a reliable version of Android 8.0 Oreo running on your 2016 flagship by the end of next month. The latest move from the company comes amid rumors that the OnePlus 5T is set to be commercialized by this year’s holiday season.
