Xiaomi on Monday announced its latest offering in the form of the Redmi 5A, an Android-powered smartphone meant to compete in the entry-level segment of the market. The handset boasts a relatively conventional design with regularly sized bezels and lacks a physical Home button, with Xiaomi instead opting to equip it with three capacitive keys. A fingerprint reader isn’t part of the package, as suggested by the extremely low price tag of the Redmi 5A which will set you back only 600 yuan, or just a little over $90 by today’s currency exchange rates.
The newly unveiled handset is equipped with a 5-inch screen boasting a resolution of 1,280 by 720 pixels, meaning it’s of the regular 16:9 variety. Despite its extremely aggressive price, the Redmi 5A still ships with a chip that’s considered to be a member of the lower mid-range segment – Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 425. This particular piece of silicon comes with the Adreno 308 GPU and a quad-core processor clocked at a maximum operating frequency of 1.4GHz. The SoC was manufactured on the 28nm process node and hence isn’t likely to be extremely energy-efficient, though the small display panel of the Redmi 5A should still be able to last plenty of hours on a single charge seeing how the handset boasts a 3,000mAh (non-removable) battery. Xiaomi’s new offering features a Hybrid SIM setup, meaning you can choose between inserting two Nano SIM cards into the device or opt for a single SIM card and a microSD card, the latter of which can expand the storage space of the handset by up to 128GB. EMUI 9 based on Android Nougat comes pre-installed on the phone, the Chinese OEM confirmed.
The rear plate of the Redmi 5A accommodates a 13-megapixel sensor situated behind a lens with an aperture of f/2.2, whereas a 5-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture can be found on the front of the device. Xiaomi Mall, Lynx, and JD will start offering pre-orders for the Redmi 5A later today, with the Android smartphone being scheduled to start shipping to consumers by late October. The handset is likely to eventually make its way to India, though it remains to be seen whether Xiaomi ends up targeting more markets with its new entry-level offering which is meant to succeed the Redmi 4A.
