Facebook continues to ramp up its efforts to lure more teens into using its services by acquiring tbh, an anonymous polling app that has become a big social media hit with high school users since the app’s debut in August. For those of you who might not be familiar with what tbh offers, the service lets you send anonymous compliments to friends, with tbh noting that its service is unlike any other anonymous apps in that it only accepts positive feedback.
The goal is to somehow counter the proliferation of cyber bullying in the form of nasty comments spread by anonymous accounts through the internet. More to the point, when its creators built the app, what they had in mind was to make you feel better about yourself through a social networking community. In announcing Facebook’s acquisition of its service, tbh’s creators said they believe “people craved genuine and positive interactions in their online experiences.” Tbh now wants to continue to fulfill the emotional needs of its users with Facebook, where the company’s founders will be moving in to continue running the startup business. That means its creators will be relocating to the social networking giant’s Menlo Park, California-based headquarters to operate tbh going forward. The teen-targeted anonymous polling app has gained much traction among high schoolers over the last couple of weeks. In fact, its founders noted that more than five million people have downloaded the app since its launch, with most of its users having sent more than a billion positive feedback to their friends. In some instances, the app has contributed to aiding people in recovering from depression and establishing better relationships with others, according to tbh.
Now with more resources and financial backing from Facebook, tbh vows to carry forward its work to build more features for its users. It is not immediately known, however, how much Facebook paid to acquire tbh, as financial details of the takeover has not been made public. At the moment, tbh is free to use, though it remains unclear whether Facebook plans to cash in on the service through ads. The app is already available in select states in the US since its initial launch in Georgia, with its founders planning to expand the service to more states in the near future. The app is currently available only on iOS devices and it is not clear when tbh will be rolled out to Android, though it is highly likely following its acquisition by Facebook.
