Google on Monday acknowledged reports from some owners of the Pixel and Pixel XL who complained about not receiving text messages on their devices despite being able to send ones. One of the company’s community managers said that its software engineers are presently in the process of developing a fix and reflected on individual reports that rebooting and resetting smartphones eliminates the problems in some rare cases, noting that a simple reboot is something everyone who’s affected by the problem should “definitely try.” As a factory reset is a more aggressive measure to take in an attempt to get rid of any bugs, the Googler strongly suggested that consumers looking to perform it should create backups of all of their data before reverting their smartphones to factory settings.
The user who filed the original report is a Verizon subscriber with the 2016 Pixel XL who started noticing they’re unable to receive messages around the time of performing the Android 8.0 Oreo upgrade, noting how the problem may not have been caused by the new version of the operating system. The affected device isn’t able to receive messages either through the Verizon Message+ or Android Messages app and Verizon’s customer service representatives weren’t able to resolve the problem, having only managed to confirm that the smartphone itself is in working order and suffers from no hardware defects. The same user claims that the Verizon Message+ app works just fine on their other Android devices including at least one tablet, suggesting that the problem is specific to Google’s 2016 flagship. The thread containing the original report from late September now has responses from multiple other owners of both the Pixel and Pixel XL who are experiencing the same issue.
One user suggested that activating and immediately disabling the Airplane Mode fixes the problem of text messages not being received by the smartphone but no solution with a 100 percent success rate has yet been identified by the Pixel community. Likewise, the Alphabet-owned company didn’t provide a specific time frame for when the fix will be distributed to users, with the Googler who acknowledged the issue only promising to keep the community updated as more information on the matter becomes available. A different source claims they stopped receiving text messages even before the Android 8.0 Oreo update, adding more credence to the possibility that the problem transcends a single OS build.
