Google teamed up with professional photographer Timothy McGurr to promote its newly announced Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL flagships, opting to visit New Orleans, Louisiana with the goal of photographing the city and showcasing the imaging capabilities of its latest Android smartphones. The images that can be seen in the gallery below are a slightly resized and more mobile-friendly result of that partnership, with none of them being retouched in any way; everything Mr. McGurr managed to deliver came out of the Pixel 2 the moment he activated its shutter and is a result of Google’s hardware and software working in harmony, the company suggested.
The images themselves were likely hand-picked to showcase the ability of the Pixel 2 devices to shoot high-quality photographs in a wide variety of scenarios, from landscape shots and portraits to close-ups of food and architectural photography, with the only conventional photography type missing from the set being a traditional macro shot. The landscape and cityscape shots were taken by Mr. McGurr at dawn and dusk, presumably to showcase the Pixel 2’s capabilities in terms of supporting a high dynamic range. Despite the fact that his photographs feature extremely light and dark areas, they’re neither blown out nor underexposed, nor do they seem to suffer from a lack of detail in any area and generally look impressive for a smartphone camera. The same goes for the picture of a seafood restaurant decorated with bright neon signs at night – the Pixel 2 managed to reduce its highlights just enough so that they can be clearly seen without smudging their colors or eliminating any of their details, while the rest of the building also looks relatively sharp and the image as a whole features almost no noise.
The half a dozen photographs that can be seen below are the latest addition to the #TeamPixel initiative meant to showcase the potential of Google’s Android smartphones as advanced mobile photography tools. The program just recently celebrated its first anniversary, with the Alphabet-owned company promising that it’s preparing some related surprises for its followers and hinting that some kind of a competition may be in the works.
