Huawei Confirms that EMUI 8.0 with Android Oreo Coming to Mate 9, P10

In Munich today, Huawei took the wraps off of its latest smartphone, the Huawei Mate 10 – as well as the Mate 10 Pro and PORSCHE DESIGN Mate 10. Now the Mate 10 family comes with a new version of EMUI which is Huawei’s own software, but it also comes with Android Oreo, which is a first for Huawei and it is actually the only other smartphone besides the Sony Xperia XZ1 family and Pixel 2 family to launch with Oreo so far. Now, Huawei has confirmed that its previous flagship families, the P10 and Mate 9, will be getting Android Oreo, which should really be no surprise to anyone.

As is usually the case when a manufacturer says that a device will be getting a new version of Android, there was no specific date for these updates to roll out. Other than Huawei saying “soon”. This isn’t just because the company doesn’t want to get customers hopes up of rolling out an update at a specific date, but because its software team could run into issues with the update and need to work on some bugs and such before release. It wouldn’t be surprising, however, to see these updates launch in 2018 though. Considering Huawei will want users to buy the Mate 10 if they want Android Oreo, unfortunately.

With the Mate 10, Huawei debuted a smart scene recognition feature for the camera, which despite the Mate 9 having essentially the same camera (20-megapixel RGB and a 12-megapixel monochrome Leica sensors) it won’t be receiving this feature. That shouldn’t be a huge surprise, given that Huawei wants to give users a reason to buy the Mate 10 instead of sticking with the Mate 9. Huawei did also mention at its event in Munich today that its flagship devices will get security patches every month, with mid-rangers getting them every two months. And then its entry-level handsets will get security patches every 3 months. Which is a good idea, seeing as users spend more money on flagships, and typically flagships are bought by hardcore Android fans that know these patches come every month and these devices are typically a manufacturers’ top seller, so it makes sense to break it down this way.
