iPhone X stocks likely to be 'catastrophically' low when pre-orders open tomorrow

November 3, November 3, November 3 - you've had the date etched into your memory ever since the iPhone X was announced back in September. In the meanwhile you've been saving your pennies and ignoring all the other tempting mobile phone deals because you'll definitely be getting your hands on the new iPhone X on November 3, right?

Well actually, that's probably wrong. A source at a popular phone retailer tells us that the "chronic lack" of iPhone X handsets available worldwide after launch will be a "catastrophe".

"Our advice would be to pre-order as soon as possible if they want the new iPhone. It is highly likely to sell out very quickly and we know that some retailers and networks have only been assigned a tiny number of the handsets. A tiny number. And maybe it'll be into January or February before there is enough stock to go round," said our source.

These sentiments have been echoed throughout the UK phone industry recently, with both networks and resellers frustrated at the potential lack of stock.

It's possible, of course, that the premium pricing of the phone will mean that outright demand isn't quite as high as some are anticipating. But just looking at the traffic on TechRadar's iPhone X content right now and over the last month, we can see that the interest in this phone is extremely high.

So the advice here is pretty obvious. If you absolutely must have the new iPhone X as soon as possible, pre-orders open tomorrow at 8am - be there or risk missing out. For everyone else, why not wait for our full iPhone X review to see if it's really as good as Apple says it is?

Best iPhone X alternatives

Pre-orders for the iPhone X go live at 8.00 this Friday morning and they'll be available to buy in store on November 3 (but then you already knew that). If you can't be bothered to sit at your desk hitting refresh or queue in the cold outside a shop for hours (or if the expected price of the iPhone X brings a tear to your eye) then it may be better to forget about the iPhone X for now.

That's all very well, but if your contract just ran out and you want to nab a new phone now, then it's worth considering going for one of these instead.
