Microtrenching Used To Deploy Google Fiber In Louisville

Google Fiber is using microtrenching to speed up the deployment of its service in Louisville, Kentucky. The rollout of the search giant’s internet service has slowed down due to a number of reasons, one of them are the lawsuits filed by rival service providers. For example, AT&T filed a case against the Louisville Metro Council in an effort to block the city’s “One Touch Make Ready” ordinance. The ordinance should have allowed Google Fiber to use the utility poles built and managed by other internet companies. Even though the lawsuit was ultimately thrown out, the search giant decided to use microtrenching instead to install fiber lines in the city.

Microtrenching is a process wherein two specialized machines cut inch-wide grooves in the street and then place the fiber lines inside the groove. The first machine used in this procedure creates the grooves and installs the fiber lines while the second machine removes the debris that resulted to making the groove. This technique reduces the time and money spent in deploying the internet service. Deployment costs are lessened as Google no longer needs to pay other companies for access to the utility poles while installing fiber lines through the process of microtrenching takes less time than attaching the fiber optic cables to utility poles. The search giant even mentioned that the time between the announcement of construction and signing up of customers in Louisville was the shortest in its record.

Google Fiber is now available in three neighborhoods in Louisville, namely in Newburg, Portland, and Strathmoor, after more than two years. Residents may choose from the two available plans. The cheaper product, Fiber 100, offers 100Mbps and it costs $50 a month, while the Fiber 1000 product, which provides 1Gbps service, is priced at $70. Google has also removed traditional TV from its offerings, although it is offering YouTube TV to customers who still want to watch live TV for $35 a month. Those who subscribe to the streaming service will be able to watch local Louisville TV stations and a number of cable channels and it also provides a cloud-based DVR with no storage limits. Google also installed a 1Gbps internet connection to Neighborhood House in Portland, an organization that is focused on helping children and families in Portland that live below the poverty line.
