OnePlus will launch an Android 8.0 Oreo beta for the OnePlus 5 “soon,” according to Carl Pei, one of the two co-founders of the Shenzhen, Guangdong-based original equipment manufacturer. Mr. Pei promised the upcoming beta program for the company’s latest Android flagship on Sunday in response to one Twitter user who was inquiring about its availability after the BBK Electronics-owned phone maker debuted an Oreo beta for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. OnePlus previously confirmed that Android 8.0 Oreo will be the last major operating system upgrade to be officially released for its 2016 flagships and if the firm sticks with that software support pattern, the OnePlus 5 will likely receive Android 9.0 next year before being retired in terms of significant OS updates.
Mr. Pei didn’t provide a more specific time frame for the availability of the Android 8.0 Oreo beta on the OnePlus 5, though his wording suggested that the program will launch by early November and possibly be out while the experimental version of the same OS is still being tested for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. The Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer traditionally takes at least several weeks to optimize its public betas for a global release and the same is likely to be the case with the newest iteration of Google’s mobile OS. The news comes shortly after OnePlus dealt with a major controversy related to some privacy concerns raised by one security researcher who realized that the firm was collecting identifiable user data on all of its devices running an official version of OxygenOS through its user experience program. Following an official apology, Mr. Pei personally promised that the company will make major changes in regards to how it collects user data and informs its customers about such efforts, though a number of critics remain adamant that the firm never had any reason to collect MAC addresses and phone numbers of people who used its devices.
The OnePlus 5 recently became unavailable for purchase in almost all parts of the world, fueling rumors that the smartphone maker is planning to launch the OnePlus 5T or OnePlus 6 in the coming weeks. The follow-up to its first 2017 device may still run Android Nougat out of the box but even if it does, it will presumably make a jump to Oreo soon after its commercial debut.
