Qualcomm and Apple are embroiled in a legal dispute with no apparent end in sight, but the chipmaker’s Chief Executive Officer is confident the two companies will eventually resolve their issues and patch things up. During his recent appearance at the Wall Street Journal’s D.Live conference, Steve Mollenkopf said that his company has a history of settling such disputes in an efficient manner and he’s confident that Qualcomm will eventually also settle the Apple issue and the two firms will work together again at some point in the future.
The legal battle between the two companies started when Apple sued Qualcomm in three countries – the United States, UK, and China – arguing that Qualcomm did not license its standard essential patents at fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) prices. Qualcomm, in turn, filed a countersuit and is even seeking to ban iPhone sales and manufacturing in China. Qualcomm previously stated that Apple is using the technologies Qualcomm invented without paying for them, seeking to prevent the company from profiting off of its inventions any further. Mollenkopf believes that it all comes down to business and paying for an essential technology without which the iPhone or another contemporary mobile device would not be what it is today. Qualcomm has also filed legal action to ban the sale of specific iPhone models in the United States, requesting a cessation order to prevent new iPhones from entering the country. For those that have already entered the country, Qualcomm wants to prevent any further sales.
The chipmaker also claimed that Apple violated six of its patents related to battery life optimization and these patents are not standard essential, which means that Qualcomm has no legal obligation to license them. In overall, Mollenkopf thinks that Apple needs to figure out how much it is willing to invest to keep using its technology. The CEO further highlighted that Qualcomm and Apple enjoy “a very strong product relationship,” which is why he believes they’ll eventually patch things up and start working together again in some unspecified future, though he didn’t provide a more specific time frame to accompany that statement.
