Samsung introduced the Galaxy Tab Active 2 earlier this week, revealing its latest offering that comes in the form of a rugged Android tablet. The device has already been the subject of multiple leaks and rumors in recent months, most of which turned out to be correct, with the South Korean tech giant revealing a slate designed in accordance with the MIL-STD-810 military standard boasting IP68-certified resistance to dust particles and water. The overall look of the tablet is largely indicative of its robust nature and the fact that Samsung was seeking to deliver a device that’s resilient to much more than everyday wear and tear. Apart from regularly sized bezels, the Galaxy Tab Active 2 features three physical buttons, with the Home key doubling as a fingerprint reader. The tablet also ships with an 8-inch screen boasting an HD resolution of 1,280 by 720 pixels amounting to a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9.
Samsung’s new product was meant to be used in industrial and similar environments as the Seoul-based company focused on preloading it with various enterprise features for asset inspection and employee management, some of which were developed in partnership with IBM. The device is also said to be resistant to gas and chemical damage and boasts native support for barcode scanning developed by Koamtac, another company which collaborated with Samsung on the development of the Galaxy Tab Active 2. While it doesn’t appear to feature a Bixby button, Samsung’s artificial intelligence assistant is part of the newly announced product and the tablet is also compatible with the tech giant’s S Pen stylus. The rear plate of the Galaxy Tab Active 2 features an 8-megapixel camera supported by a dual-LED (dual-tone) flash, with its top bezel accommodating a 5-megapixel sensor. The tablet sports a 3.5mm audio jack and 4G LTE support, though its other specs are yet to be disclosed by Samsung.
The Korean company‘s new offering was officially introduced by the Dutch division of the original equipment manufacturer which said it will start retailing the device in the European country come late November. The Galaxy Tab Active 2 is meant to be available for €500 including value-added tax (VAT), which translates to approximately $588. It remains to be seen which other markets will Samsung end up targeting with its latest tablet that appears to run some build of Android Nougat out of the box.
