The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is now getting an update that will install the October 2017 Android security patch and a number of software improvements. The October 2017 security update resolves a number of vulnerabilities including several critical security issues found in the media framework of the Android operating system, as well as a remote code execution vulnerability. Also included with this software upgrade are improvements to the stability of the handset’s launcher and DeX Mode. The latter allows the smartphone to provide a PC-like experience to the user by connecting it to a keyboard, a mouse, and a monitor. Right now, Samsung is distributing the update to units in the Netherlands, although the software package may be deployed to other markets soon enough.
The update is currently being deployed over the air and it may take several days before all devices receive the installation package. However, users may also try to start the upgrade process manually by going to the device settings. Before downloading the software package, it is important to check if there is enough free space in the smartphone’s internal storage to temporarily store the file. It is also important to back up the contents of the handset to a personal computer or a microSD card and verify that the device has sufficient battery charge to last throughout the entire installation process. After the update is installed, the new software build can be identified by the version number G955FXXU1AQI9.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus was launched alongside its smaller sibling, the Galaxy S8, earlier this year. The device is powered by the Exynos 8895 chipset which sports an octa-core 64-bit CPU with a maximum frequency of 2.3GHz and the Mali-G71 MP20 GPU clocked at 546MHz. It sports a 6.2-inch Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2,560 by 1,440 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. It also includes 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal flash storage that can be expanded with a microSD card. The rear camera is equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor with an aperture size of f/1.7 and optical image stabilization (OIS). The front-facing shooter, on the other hand, has an 8-megapixel module. The device is shipping with Android Nougat pre-installed, although it is likely that it will be upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo within the next few months.
