The original Samsung Galaxy Tab Active was launched in September 2014, over 3 years ago now. While the actual specifications were not going to win any awards in speed or performance (Snapdragon 400 processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, 8″ 800×1280 display, 3 MP camera, 4,450 mAh battery and Android 4.4.2 KitKat), it made up for it with military-grade protection, made possible by its rugged, rubberized design, IP67 water resistance, and shock protection for up to 1.2 meter drops, much like the yearly Active variants of the Galaxy S line. Samsung is now preparing to launch a revision of the Galaxy Tab Active called the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2, including better protection, updated specifications and modern software.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2’s greatest selling points, once again, are the rugged design and water resistance. The tablet should be pretty much on par with its cousin, the Galaxy S8 Active, in terms of ruggedness: a plastic/rubberized body and IP68 certification are all present here. It’s powered by an Exynos 7880 Octa, which is the same SoC powering the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 2017 variants, alongside 3 GB of RAM, a 1280×800 TFT-LCD display with 480 nits of brightness, and Android 7.1.1 Nougat (presumably with Android 8.0 Oreo update on the way). It also includes an S Pen, 16 GB of onboard storage with a microSD card slot, Bluetooth 4.2, a front facing fingerprint scanner, an 8 MP rear facing camera, a 5 MP front facing sensor, and the same 4,450 mAh battery seen in the previous version.
The tablet is seemingly business focused: it includes POGO pins for connecting third party accessories like barcode readers, and an SDK for developing business-oriented apps. And despite what the mid-range specifications could tell you, the tablet is not expected to retail cheaply at all, as a $500-$600 price is expected. It’s not clear yet whether Samsung is planning a launch event or a quiet release for this device, if they do plan on releasing it at all (after all, these are just leaks, and things could radically change or be shelved in weeks matter) but we do expect to know more about it in the following weeks.
