Korean tech giant Samsung believes the future will bring fully connected homes, with users having almost every device in their household boasting Internet-enabled capabilities. Samsung Next President David Eun spoke about his company’s vision this Tuesday at the WSJDLive conference held in Laguna Beach, California. He explained how the company expects to soon witness a “third wave” of programmable objects and consumers embracing these devices en masse as Samsung continues to invest in advancing this emerging segment of electronics.
During the conference, Eun also explained how the Internet of Things is an exciting area for his company to grow in, noting how intelligent homes could help prevent theft and other disasters, in addition to providing consumers with an unprecedented level of control over their living environments that was technologically unachievable until only recently. Eun concluded his presentation by noting that the company is seeing its most successful year to date, praising the launch of Galaxy Note 8. He also suggested that Samsung has to ramp up its software game and make sure it fits its hardware offerings going forward, providing its customers with straightforward and versatile user experiences.
Samsung’s Next division has been set up as a startup meant to explore new areas to grow the conglomerate’s products and services. The division was the responsible for the company entering the virtual reality market with its Gear VR headset, and it’s looking into IoT devices that could converge Samsung’s hardware and software departments to create intelligent, Internet-enabled products for everyday use. One of those new devices is Connect Tag introduced earlier this week, a highly portable tracker that can be attached to anything you want to keep tabs on, from your backpack to your pet’s collar. On the other hand, Samsung has a large lineup of appliances that could benefit from its recent IoT efforts and help create a truly connected home in the future. Its digital assistant Bixby already supports the company’s Family Hub 2.0 refrigerators and some of its television sets, allowing both remote control and home automation capabilities to users. Given the company’s traditionally large presence in the consumer electronics segment, a shift to AI and similar solutions appears to be a relatively natural one for Samsung to conduct.
