Last week Samsung Electronics applied for trademarking the term “Universal Browse” in South Korea, indicating that the company is working on improving its Internet browsing experience and expanding its solution onto additional platforms. The application further mentions a list of “designated goods” including mobile phones, TVs, and software for browsing content on the aforementioned devices; content such as TV shows, sports games, movies, videos, music, news, and so on.
Samsung’s current Internet browsing solution consists primarily of the Samsung Internet Browser mobile application available for download for free on the Google Play Store. However, as of this writing, the application is compatible only with Samsung Galaxy devices as well as Google Nexus phones running Android 5.0 Lollipop or above, and can also be experienced on other Samsung products such as the Gear VR headset and the DeX docking station when paired with the Samsung Galaxy S8. As for the term Universal Browse, it suggests that the company may want to further improve the browsing experience by expanding its Internet Browser – or more of the browser’s functionalities – onto other devices. Ideally, Samsung Internet Browser users would gain access to their bookmarks, browsing history and other personal content on a wider range of products as long as there are logged in with the same Samsung account cross-platform. But whether the company intends to enrich the browsing experience by releasing a new application or by updating its existing platform is unclear. Previously, Samsung managed to bring some of its browser’s functionalities onto the desktop platform through the Samsung Internet extension for the Google Chrome browser, however, there are some limitations to this approach as the solution is valid only for the aforementioned desktop browser and it is entirely dependent on Google’s product.
Ultimately there is also the possibility that Samsung may have secured this term for safe keeping and the company might not have any concrete or immediate plans for its Internet Browser in the immediate future. Otherwise, the tech giant could shed more light on the matter in the coming months following a new software update/app release, or perhaps in conjunction with the launch of one of its upcoming devices, whether it would be a new TV or a new flagship phone in early 2018.
