Samsung Mobile Executive Vice President and Head of Service Intelligence of Mobile Communications Business, Eui-Suk Chung, took the stage at the recent Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco to officially unveil Bixby 2.0, and he says that he wants the newest version of Samsung’s AI assistant to serve as a “fundamental leap forward” in its field. Chung states that Bixby 2.0 will be a reinvention of Bixby from the ground up, made to be used on any and all devices and with any and all services. Essentially, the newest incarnation of Bixby is meant to be a universally available and integrated AI assistant that can control any and all devices in a user’s life from a single point of contact.
There are three main cornerstones that will define this new identity for Bixby, according to Chung. The first is that the new platform is apparently not going to be locked down to Samsung devices. While his post did not say this outright, it is implied heavily in that he promises Bixby will become “ubiquitous, available on any and all devices.” Even if that does not mean what it seems to mean, it at least means that Samsung plans to expand Bixby across its entire smart product lineup, which will vastly increase adoption. The second cornerstone is the use of learning processes and natural language processing to have Bixby not only better understand what a user is telling it or asking it to do, but to learn about a user over time and better personalize their experience. Finally, the new Bixby will be an open platform, with developers of all sorts able to use Bixby as a base to bring their ideas to life and make them available to millions of users worldwide.
While there was no date announced for a full release of Bixby 2.0, it is currently in a private beta. There is also an accompanying software development kit, which is already being passed around to qualified developers on a private basis. Presumably, Bixby 2.0 will be released alongside the Galaxy S9, which will likely mark its initial availability to the public. While it could launch as an app or framework at any time, launching alongside the Galaxy S9 would follow previous major feature release patterns, and allow Bixby 2.0 to serve as a selling point for the new device. The reception to the first version of Bixby, present on the Galaxy S8 family and the Galaxy Note 8, was not entirely warm, and Samsung is hoping to do better this time around.
