Samsung has now announced its preliminary results for the third quarter of 2017. As part of that announcement the company has confirmed that it expects to announce 62 trillion won ($54.72 billion) in revenue and 14.5 trillion won ($12.79 billion) in operating profit during the third quarter, up from the 14.07 trillion won noted during Q2, 2017. Samsung also explains that this equates to an increase in sales during the quarter of 1.64-percent along with an increase in operating profit of 3.06-percent. What may be more impressive though is that Samsung expects sales during the third quarter to be up by 29.65-percent compared to the year before, as well as profits having increased to what is almost triple the 5.2 trillion won figure noted during Q3, 2016. As is always the case with preliminary results, these are not designed to be a firm confirmation of how the business has performed during the last three months, but instead as an indication of the results that will be announced when Samsung provides a full and richer description of the quarter.
However, prior to today’s announcement it had been expected that Samsung was going to announce a successful third quarter and in no small part due to the performance of its memory chip division which seems to be continually doing well for the company. Although, just as as importantly for Samsung has been the sales of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. As these smartphones followed on from the troubled and eventually recalled Galaxy Note 7 smartphone. As a result and being able to declare positive results quarter over quarter will be reassuring to Samsung, its investors, and likely, the market at large.
While the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are not technically the newest Samsung flagship smartphones on the market (that title now belongs to the Galaxy Note 8), it is a little too early to see how well the Note 8 is doing in sales. While this device did hit the market in the third quarter of the year, it did so towards the very tail end of the quarter. Therefore, the fourth quarter of 2017 will likely be a lot more beneficial when it comes to identifying the success of the Galaxy Note 8, and again, especially considering this is the direct follow-on device to the Galaxy Note 7. In either case, more detailed information will likely be provided by Samsung on Q3, 2017, towards the end of this month.
