Skype has achieved another milestone as the popular instant messaging and video calling app hit one billion installs on the Google Play Store, and joined a rare list of apps who managed to do the same thing. That means Skype for Android has doubled its number of downloads from two years ago. The instant messaging app has been acquired by Microsoft way back in May 2011 for $8.5 billion, and since then the software giant has been constantly updating the communication tool with fresh features and improvements to make it more useful to users who rely on Skype to make voice or video calls as well as send messages and media files to friends and family. The app is available on a wide variety of platforms, including PCs, web browsers and mobile devices. Over the years, Skype has increased its focus on helping its users become more productive in whatever task they do, thanks to the Skype for Business app. The app has also added an enhanced integration with Outlook, Microsoft’s personal information manager that is offered as part of the Microsoft Office suite. More recent updates to the Android version of instant messaging service include the ability to choose themes, an option that shows up once you launch the app, with the selection encompassing a light and dark theme. Another recent update to Skype is the addition of support for PayPal, which lets users send and receive money as the conversation goes on within the messaging app.
Microsoft has been working hard to further improve its instant messaging app, and the Redmond, Washington-based software titan promises to continue rolling out more creative features to the tool and further improve the Skype service by collecting feedback from none other its users. With that in mind, Skype is expected to announce more features and updates in the near future as the mobile app gains more users and as it reaches more download hits going forward.
