Xbox One X games: 20 promising 4K HDR games for the new Xbox One X

When the Xbox One X was unveiled at E3 2017, Xbox also revealed some of the upcoming new games that will play in true 4K on the console, which include Assassin’s Creed Origins, Sea of Thieves and Middle Earth: Shadow of War.

Now there are 130 enhanced games confirmed for the new console, but not all of them are created equal. Though the console is capable of supporting 4K/HDR at 60 frames per second along with Dolby Atmos sound, not all games are guaranteed to have all of these improvements. Some will support all of them, while some will support HDR and nothing more.

To help you keep track of the games that are pushing the console to its limits, we've put together this list of the most promising looking games for the console. Here you'll find the games whose patch details confirm they'll push at least two of the console's capabilities, whether that's 4K, HDR or Dolby Atmos.

It's worth noting that as the console isn't released yet; this list is mostly speculative and based on the specifications that are available today. Not every developer has released what their patch will do.

We were lucky enough to have some hands-on time with the games at a recent Xbox One X event, so some of the games will have our impressions listed underneath. Once we have our very own console and can play all these games for ourselves we'll be able to be much more thorough.

It's also worth keeping an eye on the regularly updated list of Enhanced titles on Major Nelson's website

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos and 60 FPS

What is it? Gears of War is a classic Xbox exclusive franchise and the fourth installment was released back in 2016. We've had some time playing its enhanced patch in action though, and we were mightily impressed by the visual and performance improvements.

For fans of the franchise, you'll know the relentless gut-rattling gameplay, and the upgrade to Dolby Atmos only stands to intensify the experience. The improved frame rate, 4K and HDR means that gameplay just as smooth and engaging, but also has an extra layer of depth and detail.

In our hands on with the Xbox One X version of the game, we came away majorly impressed by the improvements that HDR support brings to the game's lighting, both in sunny areas and night time sections, where we could see extra detail in the dark environments.

Although it's a slightly older release, The Coalition has done a great job to turn Gears 4 into a poster child for what the Xbox One X is capable of.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos and 60 FPS

What is it? The next addition to the Xbox exclusive chaotic franchise. Crackdown 3 was supposed to be a launch title for the Xbox One X but its been pushed back to Spring 2018 to make extra sure it's ready to meet those high running standards its promising.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR, and 60 FPS

What is it? The latest and sure to be greatest in the Forza Motorsport series, this is the game Microsoft is using to show what the Xbox One X is capable of. And it's a game you won't get on any other console.

We sat down with the Xbox One X-enhanced version of the game and were immediately blown away by how good it looked and how smooth it ran. This was most noticeable in the game's various environments, which showed exceptional definition, particularly as we pelted our Porsche 911 GT2 RS around the rocky desert hills of Dubai.

Thanks to HDR, the sunlight hitting the track and our vehicle looked brighter than ever. The 4K resolution also allows developer Turn 10 Studios to recreate the cars and their interiors to an astonishing degree of detail.

It's not all about sunny weather, though – we also had the opportunity to race around the famous Nürburgring track in a Nissan GT-R during heavy downpour and were incredibly impressed with how realistic the rain and weather effects appeared. Buckle up for a truly show-stopping Xbox One X demo disc in Forza Motorsport 7.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR, 60 FPS

What is it? Halo is a cornerstone exclusive franchise for Xbox, so of course you'd expect it to be one of the most enhanced titles on the new console. Halo 5: Guardians is the latest game in the franchise and it's particuarly important that it find its place on the Xbox One X with this game as it looks like it could be a while before we see Halo 6

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR

What is it? This is the highly anticipated sequel to Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor and it's coming in October. The game looks set to be bigger than the first one and we're being promised a lot more depth which makes it perfect to be one of the games that seems to be truly trying to push the Xbox One X's power.

When we played Shadow of War, the graphic jump from Shadow of Mordor was pretty incredible. The dark, muddy, moody world of Middle Earth is the perfect showcase for the Xbox One X.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR and 60 FPS

What is it? Rocket League is an online multiplayer phenomenon that's managed to turn a simple premise (rocket-powered cars playing soccer) into a devilishly complex game.

We're excited to revisit the game at 4K HDR in 60fps, and its patch is proof that even smaller-scale arcade games will benefit from Xbox One X enhancements.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR, 60 FPS

What is it? It's the latest and sure to be greatest in the football playing series. FIFA as a game series has always tried to push for high levels of realism and the power offered by the Xbox One X will hopefully mean some incredible visuals. We want to see every blade of grass. Now that the game has the cinematic Journey mode, we'll be able to appreciate those smooth frame rates even more.

This is everything we know about FIFA 18.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR, 60FPS

What is it? The hugely successful follow-up to the 2013 reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise has had a serious overhaul for Xbox One X. At the event, we weren't expecting a 2015 game to be one of the most visually impressive things we saw, but we were pleasantly surprised by Rise of the Tomb Raider.

The demo that we played was clearly flexing the muscles of the HDR upgrades. Watching Lara squeeze herself into a darkened cave, the light from her blue glow-stick reflecting off the damp walls, scorpions scurrying past her head, then emerging into an opening, seeing a dilapidated tomb bathed in sunlight really showed what HDR is capable of.

The enhancements make Rise of the Tomb Raider a worthy investment if you've never played it, and we think even makes it worth a re-visit if you have played it before.

What are its enhancements? 4K, 60 FPS

What is it? Super Lucky's Tale is definitely more 'kid-friendly' than some of the others on this list, but that doesn't mean it's any less deserving of being here. We had some time to play it at the Xbox One X event, and it's a hell of a lot of fun to play.

It's a psychedelic 3D platformer that will remind those old enough to remember of the original Spiro games.

With its bold, cartoonish looks and bright colors, it's a vivid visual experience that takes advantage of the Xbox One X's graphics engine. It doesn't have HDR, which is unfortunate, but its bright art-style has no trouble grabbing your attention all the same.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR and 60 FPS

What is it? Minecraft is a game that needs no introduction, and its 'Super Duper Graphics Pack' is set to make its polygonal world the sharpest its ever looked. We got to have a look at the Xbox One X-enhanced version of the game and it was quite fun to see a more beautiful version of what is essentially a very simple looking game.

While the game keeps its famous blocky appearance (we obviously wouldn't want that to change), it does receive vastly improved lighting thanks to the inclusion of HDR support. Colors also receive a boost, looking less flat in the process. Still, you can rest assured that the Xbox One X version of the game doesn't mess with the winning formula too much – it simply makes it better.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR, and 30 FPS

What is it? Like Gears of War 4, this is an Xbox One exclusive that's been around for a while. Though it doesn't offer the same high frame rates that Motorsport 7 will when it arrives, this game is sure to look fantastic in 4K with HDR. The best thing is, if you already own it your enhanced patch will come free.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR and 60 FPS

What is it? This is an on the rails shooter crossed with a rhythm game that's come out of Microsoft's indie ID@Xbox program. It may be an indie title, but it just goes to show that even the smaller developers are willing to make the most of what the Xbox One X can do. This is a game where speed and visuals are everything so it should look great on the console.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR and 60 FPS

What is it? The latest in the long-running horror franchise and highly praised, too. Resident Evil 7 is going all in on pushing the Xbox One X to its limits so you can get your frights delivered in high resolution with smooth visuals.

What are its enhancements? 4K and HDR

What is it? Sea of Thieves is massively multiplayer online pirate adventure coming to Xbox One X in 2018. It's a game you'll only be able to play on Windows and Xbox and it's one of the titles Microsoft is most excitedly promoting for the new console. It'll even support cross play between Windows 10 and Xbox so you can play with everyone.

It has a cartoonish art style that oscillates between tongue-in-cheek fun, and genuinely stunning. As you'd imagine, the water is beautiful. When we played it at the Xbox One X event, we absolutely loved drowning, which is something that we never thought we'd write.

Standing on the deck of your ship, the sun setting over an island brimming with the promise of treasure, the colors of the light are truly beautiful.

Read all about it in our Sea of Thieves hub.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR and 30FPS

What is it? This is the latest game in the Assassin's Creed franchise and it looks set to be the biggest yet. The trailers are simply stunning, and so we were excited to see what the actual gameplay looked like. It didn't disappoint.

The colors, depth, and clarity of the graphics are stunning. You can almost feel the heat of the Ancient Egyptian world sizzling off the screen. Environmental detail also receives a major uptick, with buildings, structures and the famous Nile River looking especially vivid.

One section saw us padding down the river on our way to meet someone before a mission. The rippling water combined with the harsh desert sunlight bearing down on us made us stop and stare with our mouths agape – this is one very beautiful Xbox One X game.

We're a little surprised that it didn't go for the full 60 FPS that the X is capable of, but from our time with it we didn't notice gameplay suffering for it.

Read all about it in our Assasins Creed Origins hub.

What are its enhancements? 4K and HDR

What is it? You've probably heard of the JRPG phenomenon that is Final Fantasy and XV is its latest addition. The games are already stunning but we're looking forward to seeing what has been done with the Xbox One X's power here - the open world of Eos is sure to be a treat in 4K.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR and 30 FPS

What is it? Are you in the mood for an online multiplayer battle royal? Yes? Well you'll probably be even more keen when it's offering 4K and supports HDR. We had some brief hands on time with the game and came away quite impressed to see it rendered so faithfully on console.

The 4K resolution really does dial up the level of detail in the game, making us feel even more immersed in the incredibly intense action. Admittedly, we'd like to see the game running at 60 FPS some time in the near future, but the added bonus of high-dynamic-range support made up for that somewhat from a visual standpoint.

What are its enhancements? 4K and HDR

What is it? It's Skyrim, it's everywhere. But this time you're getting to play it in 4K and we're willing to bet those improved textures will make the world all the more thrilling to adventure through.

What are its enhancements? 4K, HDR and 30 FPS

What is it? BioWare's new IP is a bit of a mystery at the moment but its already confirmed as an Xbox One X enhanced title. We know it's going to be a science-fiction game that leans down the fantasy vein like franchises such as Star Wars. You can read more about it here

What are its enhancements? 4K and 60 FPS

What is it? The original Doom can be installed on everything from PCs to microwaves so we have a sneaking suspicion you know what it is. It's the FPS classic and we think it's about to get a whole lot sharper looking on the Xbox One X.
