The Sony Xperia XZ Premium will get Android 8.0 Oreo in December 2017, the company confirmed. The tech giant stated on its Japanese website that it is planning to upgrade the operating system of the device in December, though the company did not mention anything regarding global rollout of the update, so it is possible that it might land a bit later for global units, but hopefully that won’t be the case.
Once the update rolls out, owners of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium will experience a number of new features, including the Picture-in-Picture mode, which allows users to open two applications at the same time. In this mode, one app is layered in a smaller window on top of the other. Notification dots, on the other hand, provides users an idea on which apps have notifications, and tapping them will open a set of quick actions. Aside from the user-facing improvements, the software upgrade also brings a number of under-the-hood enhancements. Google Play Protect, which is now incorporated into the operating system, scans the handset on a regular basis and removes potentially damaging software installed on the device. In addition to the newer version of the operating system, the upgrade will bring features that are specific to Sony devices. One of them is the 3D Creator app, which allows 3D images to be captured without the need for additional hardware or software. The photographs can then be exported and utilized for 3D printing or other similar uses. Other features that will come with the software update include the ability to autofocus during continuous shooting and smile prefetching.
The Sony Xperia XZ Premium was launched earlier this year, and it is powered by the Snapdragon 835 chipset. This SoC is comprised of an octa-core Kryo CPU and the Adreno 540 GPU. The handset sports a 5.5-inch 4K TRILUMINOS display, although it usually renders the content in 1080p in an effort to reduce power consumption. The handset comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal flash storage that is expandable by a microSD card. The rear camera of the smartphone is equipped with a 19-megapixel custom Exmor RS IMX300 sensor, and it also comes with an aperture size of f/2.0, Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF), and 5-axis OIS. The snapper is capable of recording 960fps slow-motion video with a resolution of 1080p and it can even take four images before the user presses the shutter button through its predictive capture feature. The smartphone contains a 3,230mAh non-removable battery and it supports Quick Charge 3.0 for fast top-ups.
