CyanogenMod Creator Is Developing Facebook’s Oculus Go

Cyanogen Inc. founder Steve Kondik is developing Facebook’s recently announced Oculus Go headset, XDA Developers reported on Saturday, citing Mr. Kondik’s private Facebook profile. It’s currently unclear what role the creator of CyanogenMod has in the development of the latest untethered head-mounted display that promises to popularize virtual reality, with his official position at Oculus being that of a Systems Engineer. Mr. Kondik departed from Cyanogen in late 2016, shortly before the company shut down CyanogenMod and started a process of reinventing itself. He joined Oculus this spring and works in the firm’s Seattle offices.

CyanogenMod indirectly lives on in the form of LineageOS, its spiritual successor of sorts which is presently expanding its device support in a steady manner. Cyanogen Inc. itself went through a complete rebranding and is now a self-driving company working on software for autonomous vehicles under the name Cyngn. The California Department of Motor Vehicles reportedly already provided the firm with a permit to test its solutions on public roads in the state but no firm information regarding the actual state of its technology is currently available, nor was its jump from an Android ROM company to a self-driving one been thoroughly explained in an official capacity as of now. Mr. Kondik served as a Chief Technology Officer of Cyanogen for nearly four years following a short episode at Samsung, having accumulated software engineering experience spanning over two decades to date.

His latest endeavor is apparently related to a headset that Facebook says is supposed to fill the gap between high-end solutions like the Oculus Rift and smartphone-reliant devices such as Samsung’s Gear VR. The Oculus Go will carry a $199 price tag and be released in early 2018, Facebook said earlier this week, without clarifying whether the product is meant to hit numerous markets simultaneously or if it ends up being available in the United States before anywhere else. Apart from being the Facebook-owned firm’s first standalone VR headset, it’s also the one that supposedly features the most advanced lenses ever created by Oculus but lacks certain high-end features like eye tracking. Every Oculus Go unit will come bundled with a controller and feature adjustable straps, as well as light fabrics covering its case.
