Google Fiber has lost a good number of executives in the past few months, and now it is being reported that Charles Barr its wireless leader, has also left the company. According to a report from The Information, Barr left the company a few weeks ago, but the reasoning behind his departure has not been mentioned. When Google Fiber purchased Webpass last year, Barr came along for the ride. Webpass was mainly focusing on ethernet-based services for businesses that were using a mix of fiber and broadband wireless technologies. Interestingly enough, Webpass does not provide speeds above 100Mbps, which is something Google Fiber only does.
On the news of Barr’s departure, Google Fiber would not comment on the matter. But a spokesperson did state that Fiber is dedicated to continue using the technology and services it acquired with Webpass to continue rolling out its Fiber service in different cities and regions. Noting that Webpass has grown its customer base over the past year, since Fiber acquired them, and expect to help Webpass continue to grow in the coming months and years. Barr’s departure is just one of many top-level executives in the past few months, and usually when an exodus like that happens at a company, it means big changes are afoot, or even the company being acquired or going out of business. Google Fiber has been struggling for quite a few years now, and it’s still only available in a handful of cities, and is actually losing money.
Google Fiber launched a few years ago, and wanted to bring 1Gbps upload and download speeds to everyone across the nation. However, with Google Fiber not already having the groundwork laid, like say AT&T, Time Warner, Charter or Comcast, it made this a pretty expensive endeavor. Which is why Google Fiber has been very slow to roll out across the country. It is also why Google Fiber has lost money every quarter. And now, Google is looking to expedite the process by getting rid of TV options in its next few markets that it opens in, which was announced in the past few weeks as well.
