A recently emerged Google Photos bug is preventing some users from viewing their photo and video backups made after Tuesday, October 17th. The problem appears to be relatively widespread in nature, with users from all over the world reporting that they have been affected by it. The backups themselves are still being made by the app after October 17th but cannot be viewed from within it, with the issue encompassing both the browser version of Google Photos and its mobile ports for Android and iOS devices. As things stand right now, users affected by the bug are only able to view their backups in Google Drive, the service that’s integrated into Google Photos and used for uploading your locally stored multimedia files to the cloud.
Some users claim that the problem with invisible backups has been troubling Google Photos for a while now, with the only known workaround being to allow Google Drive files to show up in Google Photos from the latter’s Settings page. This move will also sync all of your Google Drive photos and videos with the app and isn’t the most elegant solution, in addition to not having a 100 percent success rate, as suggested by some testing conducted by Android Headlines. Some users are also having issues with Shared Albums created in the last few days which are showing up empty, though no proof verifying those claims has yet emerged online. A number of other users claim the bug has been eliminated on Sunday evening but even if it was, the fix has yet to be distributed on a global level. The screenshot below illustrates the issue at hand, with Google Drive showing backups of images and videos made after October 17th but Google Photos being unable to do the same.
Google Photos remains one of the most popular apps from the Alphabet-owned company and a flagship example of its efforts to deeply integrate computer vision, machine learning, and general artificial intelligence technologies into its mobile apps with the goal of providing consumers with versatile and highly intuitive services capable of learning one’s habits and becoming more efficient with time. Google has yet to comment on the newly uncovered bug in any capacity.
