Pokemon fans who have been waiting for their favorites from Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald to hit Pokemon GO are finally starting to get their wish with this year’s Halloween event, which brings in an initial batch of Halloween-themed third-generation Pokemon. For now, Hoenn fans will be able to get their hands on Sableye, Banette, Misdreavus, Houndoom, Crobat, Duskull, and Dusclops, as well as a special Pikachu wearing a witch hat. All actions that earn candy during the Halloween celebration will earn double, and your Pokemon buddy will find more candy as you’re walking together. A Mimikyu hat is also available for trainer avatars, the first taste of Sun and Moon to hit the mobile game. Finally, the in-game store will feature loot boxes during the event that contain things like raid passes and Super Incubators. During this celebration, trainers are encouraged to share festive photos of Halloween Pokemon like Ghost and Dark types using the hashtag #PokemonGoHalloween. The event starts on October 20 at noon PDT, and lasts until 1 PM PDT on November 2.
Some of the third generation Pokemon being made available during the event have evolutions, and there has thus far been no word on these. Crobat, for example, evolves from Golbat in the games, but Niantic did not state whether trainers will now be able to evolve their Golbats. Likewise, Houndoom is shown in the promotional materials, but its pre-evolution, Houndour, is not. It is also not stated whether these Pokemon will disappear once the event is over, until it’s time to start rolling out Hoenn Pokemon more widely. According to Niantic’s press release, a wider range of third-generation Pokemon should begin coming to the game as early as December.
This move comes after apparent indications that Hoenn Pokemon were coming soon were found in the game’s code. The code accompanied new code that seemed to be for a Halloween event, and even included the classic Lavender Town theme song. Some of the Pokemon seemingly found in the code, including third-generation legendary Deoxys, are not featured in the promotional materials for the event, which means that they could be hidden, or they could end up coming to the game later on.
