It seems like Samsung is aiming to introduce a Portrait Mode to the camera of the Galaxy S8 in the near future. This was being hinted at in a response given by Samsung Electronics’ support representative to a customer who asked if the camera feature is bound for launch on the phone.
The arrival of this feature was not exactly confirmed, but the Samsung representative opened up hopes that the Portrait Mode could possibly come to the Galaxy S8, and probably Galaxy S8 Plus, through a future software update. However, it remains unclear when the South Korean tech giant plans to roll out the next software update for its flagship smartphones, though it is possible that the update is in the works already and waiting to be released. Nothing could be confirmed as well on whether the Portrait Mode update will be launched as part of a major software package or as an individual release dedicated for the phone’s camera only. To recall, the Galaxy S8 boasts a 12-megapixel rear camera with 1/2.5″ sensor size, 1.4-micron size pixels, f/1.7 lens and dual-pixel PDAF. While the smartphone’s camera software packs a plethora of features including Bixby Vision for visual searches and barcode scanning, more filters and special effects, stickers and masks, it lacks the capability to capture photos in Portrait Mode.
For those of you who might not be familiar with this particular feature, a Portrait Mode in digital photography works to let you optimally take portrait photos of a single subject. In the process, a smartphone camera uses a large aperture to isolate the subject from the background and blur out everything else through the help of a telephoto lens. More specifically, a portrait mode uses a narrow depth of field to highlight the subject and keep the background out of focus. However, some smartphone cameras like the one found on the back of the Galaxy S8 is not equipped with a dedicated telephoto lens, though these shooters can still be able to blur the background, albeit unnaturally, with the use of software. Hopefully, the Galaxy S8 will be able to achieve a ‘natural’ background blur once it receives the Portrait Mode in a future update, if at all.
